Session Overview
Hydrogen Ecosystem
Alberta is well positioned to be a leader in the transition to hydrogen. We are in a unique situation where we have already established the main components of a hydrogen economy:
- Low cost, industrial-scale hydrogen production using steam methane reforming
- Extensive infrastructure for transporting captured carbon dioxide from the hydrogen generation process
- Almost unlimited potential capacity for underground storage of CO2 and hydrogen in salt caverns and porous formations
- Large local market for hydrogen as a fuel and as feedstock for hydrocarbon upgrading and petrochemical processes
An ecosystem of organizations is also already in place to support this transition. This includes organizations that are:
- Building the local market for hydrogen
- Developing and de-risking new technologies
- Providing funding for technology development
- Marketing Alberta’s capabilities internationally
An overview of the critical challenges that face the hydrogen transition will be provided. We will identify the key players in the Alberta ecosystem that are working together to assist industry in making the transition to hydrogen.

C-FER Technologies’ Capabilities
The transition to hydrogen will introduce a broad range of challenges for adapting legacy infrastructure and building new systems to produce, transport, and store hydrogen, hydrogen products, such as ammonia, and hydrogen by-products, such as carbon dioxide.
Brian Wagg and Mark Cuglietta will provide an overview of the new testing capabilities that C-FER has developed as part of the Hydrogen Centre of Excellence.
These testing capabilities will allow us to evaluate the performance of materials and systems used in pipelines and storage wells that may be exposed to hydrogen, CO2 and other challenging environments. This includes subjecting full-scale equipment to pressures, stresses and gas compositions that are consistent with expected operating conditions.
The presentation will also highlight joint industry projects that will evaluate the performance of legacy pipeline materials in hydrogen and assess the performance of hydrogen resistant coatings.

C-FER Technologies is a subsidiary of Alberta Innovates that operates two, world-class, full-scale testing laboratories in Edmonton. InnoTech Alberta’s Capabilities
As governments and businesses transition to a future net-zero emissions economy, InnoTech is growing its service offerings in clean hydrogen and CCUS to accelerate this transition and overcome technical gaps and challenges.
Lee Kruszewski and Martin Huard will give an overview of InnoTech and the innovative services and technology development, demonstration and scale-up facilities available to address emerging hydrogen and carbon capture, utilization and decarbonization opportunities.
The presentation will specifically highlight InnoTech’s involvement in the Hydrogen Centre of Excellence through the creation of dedicated clean hydrogen testing facilities to support process and product commercialization in the production, infrastructure, and end-use segments of the burgeoning hydrogen economy.
Lee and Martin will also discuss how InnoTech’s role in the Hydrogen Centre of Excellence helps capture clean hydrogen and the CCUS intersection opportunities.
