Full-scale Testing of Line Pipe in Hydrogen Environments

A new, full-scale testing system to subject full cross-section pipeline test specimens in hydrogen environments.

The test system is housed in in an explosion proof Special Environments Chamber to provide a safe testing environment where both non-destructive tests and tests to failure can be conducted with continuous, pressurized exposure to the simulated operating environment.

The full-scale test system will have the following capabilities:

  • Specimens NPS 28 (711.2 mm diameter) by 700 mm long or as required
  • Continuous pressurized exposure to corrosive environments including liquid, liquids with dissolved gases and non-condensable gases
  • Gaseous mixtures containing hydrogen, hydrogen-natural gas blends, hydrogen sulfide or carbon dioxide
  • Circulated and controlled liquid environments to ensure uniform and consistent specimen exposure
  • Test pressure up to 65.5 MPa (9,500 psig) depending on exposure environment;
  • Test temperature 10 °C to 80°C;
  • Static or cyclic pressure loading

The setup also includes simultaneous, inline compact tension and four-point bend tests to verify small-scale performance in parallel with full-scale tests.

The full-scale test specimens can include:

  • Corrosion wall loss defects
  • Crack-like defects including colonies of stress corrosion cracks
  • Seam and girth welds
  • Dents and gouges
  • Bends and buckles

The facility will also accommodate tests of other large equipment such as:

  • Valves
  • Inline inspection tools
  • Wellheads, well casing and downhole tools for storage wells
