Shallow Gas Dewatering Pump Consortium

On November 30, 2009, C-FER Technologies, in partnership with EnCana/Cenovus and the Petroleum Technology Alliance Canada, held a technology information session to discuss the Shallow Gas De-Watering Pump Consortium. The purpose of the consortium is to:

• promote the development of cheap shallow gas pumping technology
• effectively manage the financial and operational risk associated with such development

Key messages included:

• Produced water is a significant problem for shallow gas producers. Standardized pumping technologies (>$100k) don't meet economic hurdles for shallow gas wells.
• Shallow gas producers and the people of Alberta stand to benefit significantly from production and reserve adds resulting from cost effective shallow gas de-watering pump technology.
• STATUS QUO: Prototype pumping systems are field-trialed without effective contractual agreements or rigorous bench testing standards in place, resulting in:
  • under-estimated risk
  • high pump failure rates
  • financial loss
  • hard feelings
  • stunted technology development
