Full-Scale Thermal Cycle Tests to Evaluate the Performance of Selected Premium Connections

A series of full-scale connection evaluation tests were performed to assess the seal integrity and performance of selected premium connections for 178 mm (7 inch) and 244 mm (9-5/8") casings, under conditions simulating cyclic steam well environments. The test program focused on identifying suitably qualified premium connections with gas-tight sealing capabilities in recognition of the potentially detrimental effects of steam seepage through connections. To achieve consistency between the test program and field practices, the test program included representative casing string assembly, such as multiple make-ups and break-outs of the connections, and load steps simulating cyclic loads typically experienced by casing in thermally stimulated wells. The tests of the full-scale specimens closely simulated the variation of axial strains and loads, temperature and pressure experienced by casing in a thermal cycle well operation. The unique configuration of the test setup in C-FER's Tubular Testing System (TTS) enabled simultaneous testing of up to 32 connections (4 casing strings with 4 couplings each) subjected to the same test conditions. A customized electronic leakage detection system was developed, capable of detecting and monitoring gas seepage rates of up to 40 ml/min, with a volumetric resolution of 0.05 ml.
