Co-op Program:

As well, we are actively involved in the University of Alberta's Engineering Co-op Program for engineering students in their 4th and 5th year work terms, many of whom have become full-time permanent employees upon completion of their studies.

Stories from Co-op Students:

Caleb Schulz; Co-op Term January - August, 2008:
" Currently halfway through my co-op term at C-FER, my job continues to bring many new exciting challenges.  I have had the opportunity to participate in many unique engineering problems, where my opinions and ideas are deemed important.  Examples include the conceptual redesign of a downhole tool to improve sample recovery, as well as the redesigning, drafting and sourcing of equipment for C-FER’s proprietary casing connection inspection technology.  This value placed on my ability to contribute, makes work meaningful.

The opportunity I have to work in the lab appeals to my 'hands on' approach to understanding the testing we are conducting.  During a full scale high pressure, high temperature sour gas test of a pipe connection, I was involved in the set up of high pressure lines for sour gas, pneumatic actuated valves, and the wiring of electrical boxes used to control the test procedure.  I was impressed both with the engineering controls in place to mitigate risk, as well as the attention to detail the test engineers placed on setting up and testing safely.  This potentially challenging test was successful and I am proud to have played a role in it.

These opportunities and the learning that goes with them make engineering exciting. "

Howard Yue, Employee; Co-Op Term January - August, 2007:
" Working at C-FER for co-op was a great experience.  It really gave me a chance to experience a job that isn’t common in the co-op program: a job that really requires you to have a good solid background in a broad range of engineering fundamentals.  At C-FER, I did work that was interesting, challenging, and novel with extremely talented and knowledgeable co-workers who were always willing to lend a hand.  After completing my degree, I decided to return to C-FER because the stimulating and creative work they do keeps me interested each and every day."
